“We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly, we need millions of people doing it imperfectly.” – Anne Marie Bonneau

The pristine beaches, breathtaking landscapes, sensational water holes and abundant nature walks are the very same things that draw us all here. The climate crisis is real and the impacts of our actions undeniable, and while this frightens us, it drives us to work harder on our journey towards sustainability. It’s a firm but simple respect for nature that lies at the heart of everything we do at The Sunseeker.

The Sunseeker Byron Bay Concrete Benchtops Five Mile Radius Sustainable Design

While The Sunseeker celebrates our love for design and local creatives, we also challenged ourselves to revitalise the hotel in the most sustainable and conscious way we could. For us, it’s a journey about being better, not perfect.

So far on our journey we have saved over 2420kgs (just over 1 cubic meter) of concrete from landfill by working with Five Mile Radius on custom terrazzo bench tops for all our rooms. We use as much power from the sun as we can, with 82 solar panels and a 27kwh system on the hotel plus using 100% Green power from our electricity retailer. We have 3 x 15,000 litre water tanks which service the pool and garden and each of our bungalows has its own 3,000 litre water tank.

We used sustainable and recycled timbers throughout the project and used Hemp to insulate the bungalows. We repurposed the 80's slate tile that we pulled up from the rooms into our infamous crazy pave at our reception and our brick fireplace utilised bricks we pulled from the main building.

We offer free solar-connected electric car charging for our guests that powers your EV. Plus in our garden, we have built 4 oversized gardening beds, each with a Subpod(TM) so we are able to utilise our own green waste into compost to feed our garden.

We have abandoned single use disposable bath products and utilise refillable dispensers filled with beautiful Leif bath products using Australian native ingredients.

We offer filtered water through our zip taps and refillable jugs in all the rooms and bungalows.

Our beautiful and carefully selected partners and suppliers are equally passionate about the future, providing some of the most innovative solutions in their field. We love them and their commitment to sustainable practices and minimal waste where possible.

A portion of your stay with us supports our alliance with ‘1% For The Planet’. These guys are doing great things for those who need it most and we’re so thrilled to be onboard.

Through our commitment to 1% For The Planet, we support local Not For Profits doing amazing work, like Surfers For Climate, Byron Bay Wildlife and Bangalow Koalas.

Of course, progressive sustainability means an open mind and a constant drive for improvement. We aim for transparency around The Sunseeker’s efforts, and we are happy to share with you, our valued customers, our offset methodology.

Every little bit counts, but we don't pretend to be perfect.

We are taking action on climate change by measuring and reducing our emissions, as well as offsetting unavoidable emissions.

We've worked hard to reduce our emissions through; buying 100% Green power through our electricity retailer and utilising our on-site 27kWp solar system to provide our own renewable energy.

Each year we turn to local Byron Bay sustainability consultants @Earthedconsulting to measure the carbon footprint of The Sunseeker. They work with us to identify all emissions sources occurring as a result of our operations - which covers everything from the refrigerant in air conditioning units to waste and laundry servicing amongst others.

Since we began offsetting in 2021 we have offset 112 tonnes of carbon.

We are proud to say that a night at The Sunseeker creates only 23kg of CO2 emissions. This is much lower than the Australian hotel average of 40kg per night.

We've chosen two local carbon projects to offset our carbon - one establishes native forest on the floodplain of the Wilson River in Northern NSW, providing key koala food tree species and connecting two koala populations, and another in Binna Burra extends vital habitat for a breeding population of koalas by planting over 60 native species.

WE SUPPORT

Take3ForTheSea

The Sunseeker team are passionate about partnering with organisations that encourage and actively support positive environmental awareness. Living, working, playing and raising our kids by the pristine beaches of Byron Bay means that local initiative Take 3 For the Sea is particularly close to our hearts. These legends have set out to conserve the environment and protect wildlife from the impacts of plastic pollution and waste by leading a worldwide movement of people who are connected to the planet.

Wherever we, we are connected to the sea. The ocean provides us with the oxygen we breathe and the climate that sustains us. We need a healthy ocean for our survival.

Join us in the movement, even on holidays.
